Research and development stations project

Challenges: Reviving Dormant Agricultural Research and Development

The Agricultural Research and Development Investigation Stations in Angola have suffered from prolonged inactivity, spanning over two decades. The lack of research and development efforts in agronomy and veterinary fields has led to stagnation in the agricultural sector, hindering its progress.

Solution: Revitalizing Agricultural Research and Development

  • Comprehensive Station Setup: The project envisions the establishment of 9 Research and Development Investigation Stations dedicated to both agronomy and veterinary areas. This initiative seeks to breathe new life into these critical fields.
  • Infrastructure Development: The project involves building 4 new sites and renovating 5 existing infrastructures. Advanced laboratories will be equipped with cutting-edge equipment, while greenhouses and outdoor agronomical research facilities will be set up. These stations will also be equipped with animal reproduction research and care systems.
  • Technical Staff Qualification: The project places a strong emphasis on developing a qualified technical staff capable of effectively operating the research equipment and facilities.

Impact: Revitalized Research and Agricultural Activity

  • Sector Resurgence: Through the creation of research and development stations, the project aims to reanimate a sector that has remained dormant for more than 20 years. This revival is poised to reinvigorate the agricultural landscape and its advancements.
  • Infrastructure Upgrade: The project encompasses both the reconstruction of old infrastructure and the construction of new facilities. These combined efforts will provide the necessary infrastructure for modern research and development activities.
  • Material and Machinery Supply: The project ensures the supply of all required materials and machinery, creating an environment conducive to productive research and development work.
  • Extensive Training: The comprehensive training program is expected to contribute significantly to local farming practices. The knowledge and skills acquired by technical staff will contribute to the broader agricultural community.

The Research and Development Stations project includes building as well as rehabilitating existing infrastructures in the agricultural and veterinarian research stations of Humpata.

In these two research stations, Agricultiva has built two primary schools, one in each station. Implemented at no additional costs, the schools are equipped with modern classrooms to answer the children’s learning needs, out of a deep understanding of the importance of education to the local populations and to the government at a provincial and national level.

Agronomic Field in KILOMBO (Cuanza Norte):

Establishment of Agronomic Research Stations

The project outlines the establishment of Agronomic Research Stations in strategic locations across Angola:

  • São Vicente (Cabinda)
  • N`Sosso (Uíge)
  • Kilombo (Ndalatando)
  • Humpata (Huíla)

These stations will play a vital role in advancing agricultural research by integrating various activities:

  • Varied Cultivation Research: The stations will explore irrigation technology and cultivate different varieties of crops, both new and historical. This approach aims to study the integration of new crop varieties alongside traditional ones.
  • Innovative Irrigation and Fertilization Methods: The project will incorporate new methods of irrigation and fertilization, enhancing crop productivity and resource efficiency.
  • Seed and Propagation Material Production: The stations will focus on producing high-quality seeds and propagation materials, contributing to the availability of improved agricultural inputs.
  • Storage Solutions Development: Innovative methods of product storage will be developed, ensuring the preservation of harvested crops.

5.2 Veterinary Field in HUAMBO:

Establishment of Veterinary Research Stations

The project also includes the establishment of Veterinary Research Stations in key locations:

  • Cabinda
  • N’ssoso (Uíge)
  • Santo Antônio (Huambo)
  • Ganda (Benguela)
  • Humpata (Huíla)

Additionally, a regional laboratory will be set up in Malange. These stations will contribute significantly to veterinary research:

  • Animal Husbandry Technology: The stations will analyze advanced technologies related to animal husbandry, enhancing livestock management practices.
  • Laboratory Facilities: The establishment of advanced laboratory centers in Huambo will facilitate in-depth research and analysis.
  • Diversified Research: The stations’ operational period will involve diverse research efforts, contributing to a holistic understanding of veterinary science and its applications.
